Math for Athletes

Filed under: Idiots — Cory @ 12:28 am

So we were at some restaurant tonight and the manager was discussing basketball with my girlfriend’s uncle. He was talking about how great some team is when I hear him say “so yeah, they shot 68% from the field during that game, which means they only missed like …….. uhm… 1 out of every 10 shots, or something.” He later says that he played basketball for the College of Charleston, and actually graduated.

A Couple Days in NYC

Whew, the past two days have been crazy.

We started off yesterday morning by going to the Mandolin Brothers Guitar and Mandolin shop in Staten Island. This place is completely amazing, they only carry the best instruments out there. I’ve got some pictures of the store that I will post later. Several walls of mandolins, Gibson, Collings, etc, and the guitar selection was even bigger. They had walls of dobro’s, banjos, everything. I was amazed.

After that we took the Staten Island Ferry into the city. Alana’s friend Mickey was our tour guide for the day, so it was nice to have someone who could show us around. We went to the SOHO Apple Store, which was really cool as well. Then we went to lots of other places that I can’t remember right now, but it was all very impressive.

Today we woke up around 10:30 and made it out around noon to get lunch and make our way to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s really amazing how much great art they have there.

After that we went to Times Square and walked around, a lot. I’m completely exhausted now, but we are about to go to dinner with Alana’s aunt and her family.

Drivers in New York are still crazy.

In New York

Filed under: Places — Cory @ 12:37 am

Well, we made it here. It’s 12:30am and Alana is still dancing here at the 92nd street YMCA in New York City. Fortunately they have an open wireless network here, and I brought along my iBook (with it’s nice 5+ hour battery life), so I’ve been playing around on the ‘net since about 9 when we got here.

Tomorrow we are going to a mandolin shop in Staten Island that sells Gibson mandolins, so I am pretty excited about that. Sometime tomorrow evening we are driving to Philadelphia to another dance session. After that I have no idea what we are doing.

Heading for New York

Filed under: Places — Cory @ 2:06 am

Alana and I are leaving at around 9:00 am tomorrow morning to go to New York City. This will be my first trip to the big city, so I am sure it will be exciting. I’m not sure how much ‘net access I will have throughout the next few days, but I am taking my iBook with me so if there is wireless anywhere around I will be online. We are scheduled to get back into San Antonio around 2:30 on Monday.

Today was a pretty good day, actually. When I got to work I was able to finish up a project that I had started the evening before, and took care of a few other odd and ends before lunch. Most of the team went to Double Dave’s for lunch, which was great, and we introduced Eric to their dessert pizza. After that we checked out some new furniture, and headed back to the office. I reorganized a few things relating to our source code control system when I got back, then Edwin and I headed down to play ping pong before leaving. Nothing big, just a pretty good day, and nothing went wrong.

Anyway, that’s all for now.

Varekai, Allergai

Filed under: General — Cory @ 3:16 pm

Last night I went with Alana and her parents to see Cirque Du Soleil perform Varekai. Wow. If you ever have a chance to go see a Cirque Du Soleil show, go, you will be impressed. I have no idea how some of the things they did are even possible, for a human.

I’ve been sick most of this morning with some sort of issue related to allergies. I am feeling better now, it feels really good to be at work.

A Blog, Finally

So I finally set up a blog. Not that I have anything strikingly interesting to talk about, but occasionally there is something that is worth retelling, or I find some music that others should hear.

Anyway, I am going to see Eleven Hundred Springs tonight at Floore’s Country Store. I have not seen them before, but I’ve heard some of their stuff and I liked most of what I have heard.
