Sarah is in Town, Allergies Suck

Sarah was in town this week on a business trip, and I was able to meet up with her yesterday evening. We walked around downtown for a little while and then she grabbed her iBook and I brought her out to see our apartment. I spent some time teaching her how to do some neat stuff with her Apple laptop, and then we met up with Todd for dinner at Rosario’s. Todd and Sarah are both from Covington, Louisiana and were in the same high school class in Mandeville, but did not know each other. We had a lot of fun at dinner and afterwards I dropped her off at her hotel so she could study for a test. Todd came over to watch Ocean’s 12 with Alana and me.

Tonight I was originally going to hang out with Brandon, but since Sarah was in town for such a short time I asked Brandon if we could reschedule to next week. Sarah called just before I was going to leave to go pick her up from downtown to say that she was going to be busy with work stuff and would probably not be able to hang out tonight. Bummer, but around this same time I began to have a problem…

You see, I have pretty bad allergies, and right now there is something wicked in the air here in southern Texas. I can barely walk outside without sneezing and having my nose run off. I’ve been taking Zyrtec for the past few days and that helps some, but my eyes still itch and well, I still have pretty bad allergies. Well, today during the peer review session my eyes were itching extremely bad and it got to the point where Will suggested that I go take some benedryl type medicine that he had at his desk. I went back to our desks, grabbed two pills from the bottle, returned to the room and took the pills. Bad, bad idea. Apparently I only should have taken one pill, which everyone told me later. By the time that Sarah called I was passing out (literally) in my desk chair. It was a very strange feeling, and I believe I blacked out at some point because I remember reality fading back in and realizing that Will and Dave were staring at me and laughing. They stare and laugh at me a lot, in fact, everyone at the office does, so that was not unusual. It was scary this time because I couldn’t remember the past couple minutes. I remembered putting my head down on my desk, and at some point noticing that they were watching me. Freaky.

So, by the time Sarah called to say that she would not be able to hang out this evening, I was pretty much in a state were I wouldn’t be able to hang out even if I wanted to. I eventually fell back to sleep at my desk and I decided this was ok because there was no way I would drive in that condition. I woke up about an hour later and felt that I was aware enough to drive, so I headed home a little before 7:00. I fell asleep as soon as I got home and just woke up about half an hour ago.

The moral of the story is this: if Will ever offers you some medicine that he calls “benedryl,” kindly refuse, that stuff is intense!

Tomorrow Dave and I are heading up to Austin to see The California Guitar Trio with Alana’s dad. I am pretty stoked about the concert, they are really amazing. Afterwards I will be riding with her dad back to Wimberley, TX to spend the weekend there. I am hoping to get a chance to see Hill Country Guitars.

Eleven Hundred Springs is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands.

A Year with Alana, Friends in Town

Yesterday, April 1 2005, marked one year of dating for Alana and me. I can’t believe it has already been a year, but the calendar does not lie. Over the past year we have traveled together a lot (Rochester NY, Virginia, Houston, NYC, etc), she’s met most of my friends and I have met most of her’s, and we have learned a lot about each other. She is still quite amazing. :) I am not sure I will ever understand how she is able to make complete strangers feel so comfortable around her (whatever personality trait this is, I am sure that I do not have it). She has certainly changed my life in more ways than one (as well as my hair), and I can’t imagine what I would be like without her now. I love you Alana!

My friend Melinda was in town this weekend with her husband Steve for the wedding of their friends. She wrote to me a few weeks ago to see if we could get together at some point, which of course sounded great to me. So after their arrived in town yesterday and picked up their rental car, I met up with them and took them to eat lunch at one of my favorite restaurants in town, Adelante. Alana had already arrived and had a table waiting for us. It has probably been over two years since I’ve seen Melinda, so it was nice to have lunch and catch up with what they have been doing. Afterwards we brought them by our apartment and talked for a little while until they had to head downtown to their hotel and begin preparing for the rehearsal.

Since yesterday was both April Fool’s day and our one year dating anniversary, Alana thought it would be funny to trick her parents and grandmother by telling them that we had gotten married on the spur of the moment earlier in the day. I did not think this was so funny, but she went ahead with the prank anyway. Alana came up with a ring from one of her students that would work for surprise, while everyone was in shock. When her parents and grandmother showed up at the dance competition that we were at last night, Alana could barely contain her excitement as they walked over towards us. When they were all standing in front of us Alana told them that we had gone to the courthouse earlier and gotten married, and showed them the ring from her student. They stood there for about two seconds with their mouths open until her dad gave me one of the greatest compliments I have ever had. He said “I know better than this, Cory would never do something this irrational.” He is SO right!

Also, Sarah called yesterday to say that she is going to be in San Antonio next week for a business trip. Sarah came to visit a little over a year ago, so it will be great to see her again. She has Wednesday afternoon free so I hope to leave work a little early that day and hang out with her.

Cigars and String Theory

Filed under: Friends — Cory @ 1:47 am

Brandon came over last night for our second evening of “cigars and string theory.” A few months ago we invited him over for dinner, along with Todd, another friend of ours, and after dinner Alana and Todd went to see a movie while Brandon and I stayed at the house and smoked cigars on the front porch. Two weeks ago we were able to hang out again, and after enjoying cigars we decided to begin watching The Elegant Universe, which I had recently bought on DVD. Since these evenings are so much fun, we decided to try to hang out more often. So last night we grabbed a Double Dave’s Pizza, a few good beers, several Punch Maduro cigars and headed for the front porch to relax and talk. After several hours and many great conversations we came inside to begin watching the second episode of The Elegant Universe, which is an introduction to String Theory. Mind boggling stuff, but extremely fascinating. I really enjoy this “guy time.”

Tonight I went over to Pepper and Ethan’s house to play dork cards, another weekly ritual that I enjoy. Jason and Josh were there again this week, which is great because everyone is really funny and we always have a great time making fun of how dorky we are being.
